What is The Prevent Strategy?

Prevent is a government strategy which aims to prevent/stop any child or young person from supporting extremist ideologies or from becoming involved in terrorism. The Prevent Strategy aims to protect against all forms of terrorism and extremism; including extreme right-wing ideologies, violent groups and other causes.

 

How does the Prevent Strategy apply to schools?

From 2015, the government set out that all schools have a duty to safeguard children and young people from radicalisation and extremism. This means that schools have a duty to protect children from extreme and violent ideologies in the same way that we teach children how to keep safe online and the dangers of drugs.

 

What does this mean at Newborough?

Above all at Newborough, we provide children with a safe environment where they are actively encouraged to share their worries and/or concerns but also, to know the importance of questioning or challenging alternative viewpoints to their own with respect. The Prevent Strategy is embedded within our school vision and ethos, explored through our curriculum and is upheld through activities such as daily worship.

In addition, we also:

• Put safeguarding children at the forefront of everything that we do
• Explore other cultures and religions whilst promoting diversity and respect
• Challenge prejudices (behaviour which contradicts any aspect of Equality Law)
• Develop thinking skills and a strong, positive self-identity
• Promote the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils, as well as British Values such as democracy
• Protect our children from the risk of radicalisation, for example by using filters on the internet to make sure they can’t access extremist and terrorist material, or by vetting anyone who comes into school to work with our pupils.

• Extremism – vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values such as democracy, the rule of law and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

• Ideology – a set of beliefs

• Terrorism – a violent action against people or property, designed to create fear and advance a political, religious or ideological cause

• Radicalisation – the process by which a person comes to support extremist behaviour
